How many smoke alarms do I need in my house?

Law requirements for smoke alarms are different in each state:

QLD: It is stated on the QLD Fire and Emergency Services website that all landlords must install interconnected smoke alarms in residential rental properties by 2027.

NSW: Fire and Rescue NSW have stated that there’s a requirement for at least one smoke alarm on each level of a property. This is including: all homes (houses, relocatable homes, caravans and campervans). Anywhere that people sleep.

VIC: Fire Rescue Victoria requires all houses, units, flats and townhouses to have smoke alarms fitted in each room. Also, buildings built after 1 August 1997 must have hard-wired smoke alarms with a battery back-up. Structures made before then can have the battery-powered smoke alarms.

SA: South Australia Metropolitan Fire Service has made it compulsory for all rentals to have at least one smoke alarm in each home. They must be battery powered or hard-wired (240-volt mains powered) smoke alarms.

NT: Northern Territory Police, Fire & Rescue Services mandated that all residences need to have had working smoke alarms installed from 1 November 2011.

WA: Western Australia’s Building Regulations 2012 sets requirements for all homes, duplexes, hostels, tourist parks, farm stays, holiday resorts, and cabins in caravans parks to have one smoke alarm installed per level. Battery operated smoke alarms are allowed if mains power is not attached to the dwelling.

ACT: ACT Government stated that all homeowners had until 24th August 2018 to be compliant with smoke alarm laws. Needing one on each level and between bedrooms.

TAS: Tasmanian Fire Service has stated that smoke alarms must be located at the top of stairs (top and bottom), hallways, and in every bedroom.

What is the penalty for non compliant smoke alarms in Qld?

You can be fined up to $2,750 or up to 0.15% of the sale price of your property. This would be for failing the installation, maintenance, or ensuring that smoke alarms are in proper working order.
